Summer 2025 marked a significant chapter in my personal and professional development as I took on the role of a summer camp counselor at Camp Funshine for Town of Matthews, North Carolina. This experience, full of challenges and revelations, taught me invaluable lessons about students, children, and the dynamics that exist within a camp setting. Here, I will share my insights, focusing on the importance of communication, the value of creativity, the significance of empathy, and the impact of teamwork.
Communication: The Foundation of Connection
One of the first lessons I learned was the significance of effective communication. Working with children aged 6 to 15 required me to adapt my communication style to ensure that my messages were clear and engaging. For example, during a morning assembly, I noticed that using simple language, coupled with gestures and visual aids, captured the campers’ attention better than using complex vocabulary.
Additionally, I learned to listen actively. Many children expressed their thoughts and feelings through stories or spontaneous questions. By being attentive, I not only built rapport with them but also fostered an environment where they felt safe to share and participate. For instance, when a camper named Lily hesitated to join a group activity, I took the time to engage her in conversation, which allowed her to articulate her fears. This interaction not only helped her feel valued but also encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone in the future.
Creativity: Fueling Engagement and Learning
Working at Camp Funshine reinforced my appreciation of the role of creativity in children’s development. Many of our activities were designed to be fun while also educational, but I quickly learned that the most effective activities were those that encouraged imaginative participation. One memorable project was a themed art day, where campers created their own superhero costumes from recyclable materials.
The excitement was palpable as the children brainstormed their ideas and collaborated on designs. This activity not only tapped into their creative potential but also allowed them to express their individuality. I observed that when given the freedom to create, children became more invested in their projects, leading to a deeper understanding of teamwork and problem-solving. For example, a group of campers who initially struggled to agree on a design eventually learned to compromise and incorporate each other’s ideas, resulting in a unique and collaborative masterpiece.
Empathy: Understanding Perspectives
As a counselor, I was often faced with conflicts or emotional outbursts among campers. These situations provided me with profound insights into the importance of empathy and understanding different perspectives. Children, regardless of their age, experience a wide range of emotions, and their reactions often stem from feelings that may not be immediately apparent.
One notable incident involved two campers, Jake and Mia, who had a disagreement over sharing art supplies. Initially, the conflict escalated, with both children expressing their frustration loudly.
Instead of intervening immediately with a reprimand, I took a step back and allowed them to express their feelings. Once they calmed down, I encouraged each child to share their perspective about the situation.
Jake explained that he felt overwhelmed because Mia was using the supplies he wanted. On the other hand, Mia shared that she was anxious about finishing her project, which made her reluctant to share. I realized that both children were experiencing valid emotions that led to the conflict. By facilitating this conversation, I helped them understand each other’s feelings, which fostered empathy between them.
After this discussion, they agreed to take turns using the supplies and even collaborated on a combined project. This experience taught me that by modeling empathetic behavior, I could guide children to resolve conflicts effectively and build stronger relationships. Empathy not only helped de-escalate tensions but also encouraged a supportive camp culture where campers felt comfortable discussing their feelings and challenges.
Teamwork: The Power of Collaboration
Another significant lesson I learned at Camp Funshine was the power of teamwork. Many of our activities were designed to promote collaboration, and I quickly recognized that children thrive when they work together towards a common goal. During a team-building exercise, we organized a scavenger hunt that required campers to solve clues and complete challenges as a group.
I observed that children naturally gravitated towards roles that suited their strengths. Some campers excelled at deciphering clues, while others were fantastic at rallying the team and keeping spirits high. For instance, during the scavenger hunt, a quieter camper named Sam took the lead in organizing the team’s strategy, showcasing his leadership abilities. Meanwhile, another camper, Emily, used her artistic skills to create a map of their progress, which further boosted the team’s morale.
The experience highlighted the importance of recognizing and appreciating each camper’s unique contributions. I learned that fostering an environment where every child felt valued led to increased cooperation and creativity. The success of the scavenger hunt was not just in completing the tasks but in how the children learned to depend
Conclusion
Reflecting on my summer as a camp counselor at Camp Funshine in Matthews, North Carolina, I recognize that the experiences I shared with the campers profoundly shaped my understanding of children and their development. Through the pillars of communication, creativity, empathy, and teamwork, I was reminded that effective engagement with children goes beyond mere instruction; it requires a deep understanding of their emotions, perspectives, and unique abilities.
Effective communication was essential in building connections and fostering an environment where campers felt comfortable expressing themselves. The emphasis on creativity not only made activities enjoyable but also encouraged individual expression and collaboration. The practice of empathy allowed me to navigate conflicts and promote emotional intelligence among campers, teaching them the value of understanding one another’s feelings. Finally, teamwork demonstrated that collective efforts often lead to richer experiences, as children learned to appreciate and leverage each other’s strengths.
Overall, my time at Camp Funshine reinforced the idea that children are not just passive participants in their development; they are active contributors who thrive in an environment that nurtures their voices and creativity. As I move forward in my educational career with Planet Improv, Incorporated, I carry these lessons with me, committed to fostering positive experiences that empower children to grow, collaborate, and express themselves.
The joy and growth I witnessed during those summer weeks will undoubtedly influence my approach as I continue to work with young people, this school year and beyond, ensuring that they feel valued, understood, and inspired to reach their full potential.
